Updated for June 7th!
Here’s a map of 2023 Magicicada straggler sightings from 2023 Magicicada stragglers iNaturalist project and the Cicada Safari app. Dr. Gene Kritsky compiled the map.
It looks like there are plenty of stragglers from these broods:
- Brood XIX, in the south that are 1 year early.
- Brood XIII in the Chicago area that are 1 year early.
- Brood XIV in the Cape Cod area that is 2 years early.
- Brood X, which are 2 years late.
- Brood VIII, which is 4 years late.

Oct 3rd 2023 a lone m.Cassini heard singing loudly on this 85deg day in Wheaton Illinois pretty crazy
Noticing a few cicadas here in Wheeling, WV! We are located right on the border of Ohio and Pennsylvania also known as the tri-state area.
Wheeling WV — home of one giant Cabelas!
I have cicadas here in williamstown New jersey. A bunch of vibrantly colored blue green ones almost 2.5 inches long black eyes. A bunch in my development. I also saw a yellow locust about 1.5 in in my yard today.
I know where that is. I’m in central NJ, but I travel to the Pinelands for blueberries and hiking. You have these cicadas in your town: Neotibicen tibicen tibicen (Linnaeus, 1758) aka Morning Cicada, Neotibicen linnei (Smith and Grossbeck, 1907) aka Linne’s Cicada, Neotibicen winnemanna (Davis, 1912) aka Eastern Scissor(s) Grinder, Neotibicen lyricen lyricen (De Geer, 1773) aka Lyric Cicada, Megatibicen auletes (Germar, 1834) aka Northern Dusk Singing Cicada, Neotibicen canicularis (Harris, 1841) aka Dog-day Cicada and in June Neocicada hieroglyphica aka Hieroglyphic Cicada.
Are they in nyc? Looks like they are appearing in brooklyn ny
Magicicada, no Brooklyn, but they’re in Staten Island.
Normal annual cicadas are in Brooklyn (Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, etc.) especially the Neotibicen tibicen tibicen (Linnaeus, 1758) aka Morning Cicada type.
I heard a cassini back in late May!! (Northern Virginia, 2 year late Brood X straggler)
