Cicada Slowdown

Filed under: Tibicen — Dan @ 5:27 pm

It’s September in the USA. The cicadas are done singing in my state (Jersey), and most of the USA. More fun next year for sure.

Thanks to Jaime for this pic of two cicadas mating:

Just a few days ago i still heard some cicadas in fact i thought i heard the sound of the 17 year ones we were talking about but then when i turned the corner i heard some of the regular ones that come every year. Today is October 1st and i didnt hear any cicadas but i might still hear some more. I’m just wondering when i will stop hearing them.

I heard a cassini singing in October 2000, the fall before Brood XXIII emerged in central Mississippi. I wondered if the short days and some unusually warm temperatures fooled it into responding as though it were the next spring.

The Tibicen pictures are probably T. lyricen.

Wow then i probably really did hear a Magicicada. I will listen more carefully to see if i hear anymore because the sound i heard was that same sound the 17 year cicadas use to make. So then i guess these cicadas are early birds. I sure wish i could see one but i doubt i would. sheri

    Hey Sheri,
I have heard 2 Magicicada cassini in september so far too. One on the 12, and one on the 21nd. I think they are early Brood XIV. Im guessing the drought we have had made some trees go dormant, then when it rained about 2 weeks ago, they came back from being dormant, and tricked the cicada into thinking another year passed.

I still hear cicadas singing out here in Westmont, Illinois near Chicago in fact today i heard some of them. I dont hear alot of them anymore because they use to be noisy but i still hear groups of them. It will be interesting to see when they stop singing over here. About a week ago i was on my bike and i heard one off in the distance that sounded like a 17 year one making one wonder if its possible for a 17 year one to pop up real late after the party is already over. But i didnt stop to look for it because it could of been way up in a tree.

It looks like 2 T.walkeri’s mating to me.
