there do seem to be a lot of them out for a sub brood!
This is great to see! I was living in La Grange in 2007 and was blown away by the cicadas in the Salt Creek Preserve. My daughter was born in summer of 2007, and I got the idea in my head that we’d see them again when she was 13, i.e. this year. Researching it now, it seems like the main brood won’t return until 2024. Do you think it’s worth visiting La Grange this year with the sub-brood, or should I wait?
Mike, that’s a great question. Some Brood XIII “stragglers” will emerge for sure this year. It won’t be anything like the full emergence, but I’m sure in some suburban and urban areas you’ll be able to find a handful of them.
